I AM THIRSTY!
“ As the deer pants for the water brooks, so pants my soul for you, O God” (Psalm 42:1).
David compares his love and desire over God with that of the deer and says “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Psalm 42:2).
Of all the animals, the deer has a special characteristic of finding the water brooks. The deer finds the location where water is available through sniffing and will run in that direction. While running so, all the way it will be expressing its desire by bellowing. No water other than the water brooks will quest the thirst of the deer.
See! When a lion or a bear feels thirsty, they will hunt another animal, drink its blood and quench their thirst. But the deer do not fall in this category and they do not even drink stagnated dirty water. What they desire to have is the running pure water of the brooks only.
The people of the world try to quench their thirst through money, wealth, fellowship of the worldly friends, alcohol, gambling, cinemas and plays. But the fact is that these factors will only increase the thirst and not decrease.
But, Jesus Christ alone is the one who could quench your thirst. David says, “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.” Yes. He alone is one to quench the thirst. When you say “God, you are enough for me, you are my part. What I need is your presence alone. It is you who has to fill my heart and comfort me” with thirst and desire, He will definitely quench your desire and thirst.
Find in the book of Psalms, in how many ways David reveals his thirst over God. He says, “One thing I have desired of the Lord, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple” (Psalm 27:4). Yes. This reveals David’s thirst over the glory of God and the temple of God.
David not only had thirst over God but also over God’s words. He writes, “I opened my mouth and panted, for I longed for your commandments” (Psalm 119:131).
To meditate: “With my soul I have desired you in the night, yes; by my spirit within me I will seek you early” (Isaiah 26:9).
