Let us pray, May the words of my mouth and meditation of all
our hearts be acceptable to you O rock and redeemer.
The given passage for today’s short meditation is from Romans
2: 1-11. In that I would like to meditate upon first 2 verses. I would like to entitle this reflection as
Before, we Judge !
The letter of paul to the romans was considered to be written by Apostle paul from Corinth,
around 57-58 BCE shortly before he made his last trip to Jerusalem. Romans was written in an irenic mood. Paul
knew only the risen Christ, unlike the twelve apostles. Paul sees jesus Christ as the savior of all
humanity, in contrast to Mathew who saw Jesus as the long awaited Messiah of
the old testament. Paul believed that
justification could be obtained through faith in Christ and not through
observance of Jewish law.
It does not really matter exactly whom paul is addressing in
vs1. His points applies equally to both
Jews and non-Jews. The person paul is addressing likely to agree with the
apostle that God punishes sinful behavior.
The first two verses say that we should not judge
others. Why? Paul speaks of universal
salvation for all who believe in
Jesus. All who believe in jesus are a
new creation. God has only one
judgement. It is that everyone should be
saved and everyone should enjoy the fullness of life in jesus. By judging others, we degrade the dignity and
honour of God’s grace abiding in them.
In other words, we throw them out of the sphere of spiritual and
psychological wholeness. The judgment we
make on others is reflected in our activities.
Let us manifest an attitude of acceptance as Jesus come whatever may be
the activities they do or perform. So next time before we Judge others, Let us
think once or twice ! May God bless these words. Amen.
